Bringing a new product or treatment to market can mean an investment of many years and millions of dollars for a pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies. This research and discovery has traditionally been conducted and witnessed through paper-based processes, but leading-edge companies are turning to electronic laboratory notebooks (ELNs) and intellectual asset management applications to innovate faster and get products to market more quickly.

Ferring Pharmaceuticals was seeking a way to accelerate their patent filing processes and move products to market more rapidly. The Company made plans to move away from paper-based lab notebooks to provide a means of faster and easier information retrieval, collaboration, and knowledge sharing within and across its R&D sites in the UK and the US.

Faced with increasing competitive and compliance pressures, pharmaceutical firms are also striving to ensure that their electronic records can stand up to litigation or regulatory challenges. Ferring’s Legal Department required that the selected solution be able to ensure that their electronic records are authentic and legally verifiable. They elected to integrate electronic signatures and Surety’s AbsoluteProof service and with KineMatik’s eNovator electronic laboratory notebook solution to meet the requirements defined by their legal and R&D departments.
